The Gayatri Mantra ~ A Universal Prayer of Illumination

Om Bhur Bhuva Svaha

Tat Savitur Varenyam

Bhargo Devaseya Dhimayi

Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat

This is one of the oldest known Sanskrit mantras— an invocation to Savitur, the sun deity.

It is a prayer of Light, of enlightenment for all beings. It asks this: That through the illumination of our intelligence all beings come to know the brilliance of divine being.

I love to sing the Gayatri Mantra. These sacred Sanskrit syllables flow from my mouth like an ancient river of blessing. I sang it to my mother a few years ago and she said to me, “Yes, it’s beautiful, but what does it mean? I want you to sing it to me in English”. That prompted me to create my own translation, a translation that captures what this mantra means in my heart of hearts, a translation that I could sing to my mom.

Oh, Great Giver of Life. Grace us with illumination. Forgive us and give us your wisdom, that we may love and enlighten all. Om.

Sing it with me and bring illumination into the deepest corners of your darkness.

Sing it to help me bring forgiveness into this world of woes.

Sing it in gratitude, for the sake of goodness, and to invoke a state of grace.

Sing it that we may illuminate and enlighten our minds and come to know the brilliance of our true Being.

Om…
